The Role of Pharmacists: Your Trusted Healthcare Partners

Pharmacists play an important part in many of our everyday lives as we each navigate our health journeys. Most of us have gone to the pharmacy to pick up medication, but did you know that there is more to what pharmacists do than what we may realize? Read on to learn more about the role of our trusted healthcare partners- pharmacists!

Key Players in the Management of Minor & Chronic Ailments

According to the American Public Health Association, “Pharmacists are often involved in the clinical management of chronic diseases, and minor disease diagnosis and treatment.” This means that whether you have a cold or are facing a life-changing and long-term illness, your pharmacist is there for you! In fact, they are probably the first person you go to after your local urgent care, doctor’s office, or hospital when you have a health need. Pharmacists are a wealth of knowledge and resources when it comes to managing and treating both minor and chronic ailments (APHA).

Health & Medication Education

Pharmacists work to improve the public health of their communities through “promoting policies, prevention, interventions and education” (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists). Speaking of pharmacists being a wealth of knowledge, they are a key player in providing medication education (APHA). Most of us are not very familiar with the wide array of medications out there and often have questions when we are prescribed something. Your pharmacist is a great resource for answering your questions about medical terms, medication interactions, and so much more!

Pharmacies & Primary Prevention

Health education plays an important role in public health in the form of prevention. In fact, “Primary prevention is the essence of public health” (APHA). According to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, primary prevention is, “the prevention of disease, illness, injury, or poor health outcomes from occurring.” Not only does your pharmacy support you when you have a present and demanding health need, but they work to help their communities by preventing the health need in the first place!
