When we think of nutrition, we often think of what we eat, but what we drink is just as important! Proper hydration is an essential component of our general health in more ways than one. Read on to learn just how important proper hydration is for your overall health!

Hydration for Physical Health

Your body is approximately 60% water. It is easy to see how proper hydration can help everything run smoothly, and how poor hydration can throw everything out of whack! Water helps to prevent/relieve headaches and constipation (Healthline), “regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly (Harvard). All of these things have ripple effects and are intertwined like a net to support our physical health every day!

Hydration for Mental Health

When we feel better physically, we tend to feel better mentally, too. But it doesn’t stop there. Water supports our brain function, energy levels (Healthline), mood, and sleep quality (Harvard). Physical health supports our mental health, our mental health supports our physical health, and water supports them both!

Hydration Recommendations

So how much water do we need to reap these benefits? There are mixed recommendations. You have likely heard the recommendation to drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day for a total of 64 ounces per day (Healthline). According to experts cited by Harvard, women may need around eleven cups per day and men may need around sixteen.

Needless to say, we thrive with plenty of water! Even mild dehydration can have negative effects, so be intentional about drinking up (Healthline). Carrying a water bottle with you throughout the day can help you get those cups in, as well as drinking tea, coffee, or water flavored with fresh fruit (Harvard).
