Did you know that Pediatric Occupational Therapy could help your child succeed in school? According to the Spring Forward Family Centre, “OT focuses on the performance of everyday activities or “occupations” and uses an individualised approach to promote success and build skills in different areas. It is used to promote physical, psychological, and social wellbeing.” Read on to learn more about how Occupational Therapy can help boost academic success!

Improved Motor Skills

An important element of academic success is gross and fine motor functioning. According to SFFC, “Fine motor skills refer to the small movements performed by the hands and arms in order to complete tasks.” This applies to a wide variety of academic activities such as handwriting, using scissors, drawing, and taking tests. In a session, your child’s Occupational Therapist may work with your child to thread beads, draw shapes, and color to help improve your child’s dexterity and coordination.

Improved Social Skills

Pediatric Occupational Therapy can also help improve a child’s social skills, which can help them thrive and feel confident in school. Skill Point Therapy says that “Occupational therapy supports the development of effective communication, enabling children to express their needs, listen to others, and engage in meaningful conversations.” It also helps them to problem-solve, participate in a group, increase empathy, and build friendships (Skill Point Therapy)!

Improved Focus

Focusing can be tough sometimes. However, the ability to focus is what will enable them to get the most out of their schooling! Pediatric OT utilizes evidence-based and play-based sensory integration techniques to help your child concentrate and learn. A couple examples are using swings and weighted blankets to help your child better process the information in their environment. Pediatric OT provides a variety of techniques and tools to help your child improve their attention span (Skill Point Therapy)!

Who Benefits?

Pediatric OT can help support a wide variety of children who all have different needs or diagnoses. Some of these include: learning disabilities, developmental disabilities, autism, sensory processing struggles, and ADHD (SFFC). Think your child may benefit from support?
