4 Preventative Measures for Breast Cancer

Four preventative measures for breast cancer

If there is breast cancer in your family tree, or if you are simply just a woman, you

have probably thought about breast cancer and if it might one day affect you. Did you

know that there are actually things you can do to lower your risk of breast cancer? Read

on to learn more about four preventative measures you can take.

1. Exercise & Maintain A Healthy Weight

According to the Mayo Clinic, forming healthy habits that help you reach a

healthy weight and maintain it reduces your risk of developing breast cancer. They say

that adults should, “aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or

75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a

week”. For example, using an elliptical for thirty minutes Monday through Friday would

get you to 150 weekly minutes of moderate aerobic activity.

2. Keep Alcohol Intake At A Minimum

With any alcohol you consume, there is a commensurate increase in your risk for

developing breast cancer (Mayo Clinic). This is true even in small amounts, so the less

alcohol you drink, the better. Find healthy alternatives, such as sparkling juices or virgin

versions of your favorite drinks.

3. Get Help To Stop Smoking

According to the Siteman Cancer Center, “On top of its many other health risks,

smoking causes at least 15 different cancers – including breast cancer… And getting

help can double your chances of quitting for good: visit smokefree.gov or call 800-QUIT-

NOW (in IL 866-QUIT-YES).”

4. Breastfeed

Breastfeeding for at least one year (even if it’s spread out between two or more

children), reduces your risk of developing breast cancer (Siteman Cancer Center).

According to the Mayo Clinic, “The longer you breastfeed, the greater the protective

effect”. So if it is possible for you, breastfeed your children, and take your time with it!
